Mobile Teams to support Women and Children in Northern Iraq
The German WADI, which is working in Northern Iraq since 1993, is supporting female-led Mobile Teams in the Suleymaniah, Kirkuk and Arbil Gouvernarates. The teams contain of Medical Assistants, Social Workers and Supervisors. On daily base they visit women and children in different areas, offer basic health services, conduct awareness’ courses, visit women, who suffer from distress and if needed bring them to one of the protection centres or shelters for Women in Distress WADI is supporting in the Area. Different researches and questionnaires about female victims of Baathism, Anfal Widows and female led families were conducted.
One of the Moble Teams focus on the Hauraman Area near Halabja, which until recently was controlled by the Taliban like Ansar al-Islam Group, whose rule deprived women from their fundamental rights.
Now the assistance for these women, both in providing them health care, training and a new awareness of their role and their rights is highly important. Further help and assistance for the women and children of this region is planned.
In Kirkuk and Mosul these teams are mixed to serve the mutual Kurdish-Arabic-Turkmen understanding. Their works is part of a larger plan to establish women centers and shelters both in Kirkuk and Arbil in Co-operation with the Womens Organizations and the existing shelters. In the period from April 2003 until Mai 2005 several tens of thousend women in Northern Iraq got assistance.
