Subject: Appeal from the women Organization

We, the representatives of the different Women Organizations in Suleymaniah are addressing you in these difficult times of war and distress. Since decades we Iraqi Women both from Kurdistan and the parts of Iraq, who are still under control of the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein fight for a democratic and free Iraq, in which every individual has his rights. Especially women suffered a lot under the Ba'thist rule. Here in Kurdistan we are liberated since 1991 and achieved a lot of progress in our fight for women's rights. Together we installed many different projects in the humanitarian field, we opened centers for women in distress, advocated their rights and fought illiteracy and cooperated closely with German Ngo's like WADI. Together we want to help building a new Iraq and focus on the situation of Women. Our sisters in Central and Southern Iraq as well as in the Kurdish Areas still under control of Saddam Hussein still wait for their liberation. Their situation is a catastrophe after 30 years of dictatorship. A lot of work is awaiting us.

Now we want to help refugees and displaced women, who are fleeing from Iraq. They need our immediate help. But we are planning for the future, in which we want to participate creating a new federal and democratic country. No Democracy works without the rights of women. Humanitarian assistance and lobbying for the rights of women are two sides of the same coin.

We urge you to support our activities. We the Iraqi Women demonstrated during the last years, that there are thousands of possibilities to improve the situation of women by ourselves with foreign assistance. If there is a political environment, which allows us to work freely.

We ask you, the German public, the German Women Organizations as well as the German Government to help us in these difficult times. After Saddam is toppled the real work to rebuild our country is awaiting us.
